The honest take

Book the Four Seasons if you want a known quantity: quieter Doheny address, higher guest rating, a full-service spa and pool, and a hotel that has been running this playbook for decades. Book the West Hollywood EDITION if you want to be in the middle of the Strip's nightlife, don't mind trading the spa and hot tub for a rooftop and golf simulator, and want to save over $400 a night. Both are five-star and close together, 1.9 km apart, so the real choice is atmosphere and budget, not location.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

This is the Beverly Hills flagship built in the late 1980s in a fairly conservative high-rise mould, then softened inside with the Four Seasons house style: pale stone, heavy drapery, low lighting, a lot of flower arrangements and staff who materialise before you've finished a sentence. The rooms have French doors onto private balconies, which is unusual for LA and gives the place a slightly more residential, old-Hollywood feel than the glassier hotels nearby. The pool deck is a genuine social scene on weekends, ringed by cabanas and industry lunches, while the lobby and bar skew older, moneyed, low-key rather than see-and-be-seen.

Guests who want a traditional, service-heavy luxury stay with a spa and quiet balconies, and don't mind paying for it.

The West Hollywood EDITION

The EDITION brand is Ian Schrager's, and this Sunset Boulevard outpost carries his usual formula: monochrome palettes, sculptural lighting, a lobby that behaves more like a nightclub antechamber than a check-in desk, and public rooms designed to photograph well after dark. Billiards, a terrace, and a rooftop pull the energy upward and outward rather than into hushed private spaces, and the crowd is younger, dressed for going out rather than staying in. It sits right on the Strip, so the street outside is neon, traffic and late-night foot passage rather than the residential hush around Doheny.

Guests who want to be walking distance from Sunset Strip nightlife and are happy to spend the savings on going out instead of staying in.

At roughly $406 less a night, the EDITION gives up the hot tub and the more old-guard, spa-centric pampering of the Four Seasons, trading it for a rooftop and golf facility instead — a different kind of five-star experience rather than a lesser one.

The Four Seasons is the more beautiful place to simply sit still in, with its balconies and pool garden, while the EDITION is the more interesting place to be seen — beauty by different definitions, and the Four Seasons wins on architecture and materials.

What guests actually say

Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

  • beautiful pool area
  • attentive, friendly staff service
  • spacious, well-maintained rooms
  • mishandled communication at spa
“There is something about sinking into that incomparable mattress that just lulls you off to sleep in no time at all.”

The West Hollywood EDITION

  • top notch service and cleanliness
  • street noise and sirens at night
  • lively bar scene less family-friendly
“The noise, even though I was on the 7th floor, loud noise and sirens was very disturbing for 2 out of the 3 nights I stayed there.”

Four Seasons guests come away happier overall, praising the pool, service and rooms with only an isolated spa complaint, whereas EDITION guests, despite praising cleanliness, are more often bothered by noise and a less family-friendly evening scene.

“Amazing 3 night stay!”

Had the most incredible 3 night stay!! Booked balcony deluxe room and had requested to face back of hotel/high floor since we are light sleepers. Sam in in-house reservations was amazing and our room on 15th floor was the most quiet room ever!! Everyone at hotel super friendly and everything very clean, beautiful decor. We especially loved The Penalty box to watch Cup games. Breakfast and room service also great. Co

“Four Seasons…always a good Choice”

The Four Seasons Hotel on Doheny Drive is a truly wonderful hotel from which to explore beautiful Beverly Hills. The hotel is very well-maintained, the reception staff was friendly, and our Hollywood Suite was spacious and cozy. Since we were staying on the ninth floor, we were able to make wonderful use of the two balconies. On the fourth floor is the pool area, which is spacious for an LA city hotel. A pretty poo

“Old timey Luxury, soon should get a little facelift.”

Long (10 day) business stay at the Four Seasons. Atmosphere: luxurious, yet understated. Harkens back to the early 2000 and one can easily understand why many celebrities opt to stay here, away from prying eyes. The lobby could use a bit of a refresher. Service: top notch, especially Tom the bellman and housekeeping. Check in desk was courteous but nothing extraordinary. Location: decent, but action is at least a 20
