The honest take

Book the Principe di Savoia unless money is no object: at $910 against $2,901 for the Four Seasons, it gives you a full spa, indoor pool and hot tub, a proper restaurant scene, and a landmark address on Piazza della Repubblica for less than a third of the price. The Four Seasons wins on intimacy, on the building itself, and on pet policy and golf access if either matters to you, but at more than three times the cost that is a lot to pay for atmosphere alone. For most travellers the Principe's facilities list simply does more work per dollar.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Milano

The Four Seasons Milano occupies a fifteenth-century convent just off Via Montenapoleone, and the bones of that building are still legible: a cloistered courtyard, vaulted ceilings, frescoes uncovered during restoration and left exposed in the lobby corridor. The conversion, done in the early 1990s, kept the monastic hush rather than fighting it, so the public rooms feel low-lit and cool even in a Milan heatwave, with travertine floors and restrained furniture that don't compete with the architecture. It draws a fashion-week and old-money crowd who want to be five minutes from the Quadrilatero without announcing it.

Right for guests who want a small, hushed, architecturally singular hotel within walking distance of the fashion district and don't need a spa or pool.

Hotel Principe Di Savoia

The Principe di Savoia is the grande dame on Piazza della Repubblica, opened in 1927, all marble staircases, gilt mirrors and chandeliered ceilings in the belle-époque tradition, later refreshed but never stripped of its scale. The lobby is big and theatrical rather than intimate, with the kind of high, echoing volume that suits a hotel built for arriving by train and staying for the season. Acanto restaurant and the spa with its indoor pool sit in the newer wing, glassier and calmer than the historic rooms, and the piazza outside is busy with traffic and trams rather than boutique quiet.

Right for guests who want scale, a proper spa and pool, and a grand hotel experience at roughly a third of the price.

The Four Seasons has no indoor pool, hot tub or spa listed, so guests paying triple the price are trading those facilities for a smaller, more atmospheric building and a pet-friendly policy.

The Four Seasons is the more beautiful building to sit inside, a converted convent with real stillness, against the Principe's grander but more generic belle-époque theatre.

“Luxurious retreat in Milano”

Brought my elder parents to this hotel and it was pure luxury! It’s an odd thing to say but the Principe di Savoia is the best smelling hotel I’ve ever been to. It’s like they pump out a signature scent on each floor. Also the pool and the spa were a welcome break from sightseeing.

“Best hotel in Milano!”

Our stay here at the hotel has been nothing short of phenomenal. The hotel was perfectly located for us to be able to walk to restaurants and to the train station for day trips to Torino and Como. The hotel itself is incredible. The rooms are amazing, as is the bar and restaurant where we had a brilliant breakfast every morning. The cocktails in the bar were first class and perfect for a pre-dinner drink. The sta
