The honest take

At $1,926 vs $1,095 a night, the Ritz Madrid is nearly double the EDITION and it shows in scale rather than in any missing amenity: both have pools, spas, fitness and multiple dining options, but the Ritz's wellness centre and five restaurants under Quique Dacosta sit at the top of the category. The EDITION has a rooftop the Ritz lacks and a stronger review base (1,035 reviews at 9.0) against the Ritz's smaller, more rarefied 282 reviews at 9.5. Book the Ritz for the building and the occasion; book the EDITION if you want central Madrid, a rooftop, and to keep $800 a night.

The look and the feel

Mandarin Oriental Ritz

The Ritz opened in 1910 at Alfonso XIII's instigation, a Belle Époque palace facing the Prado and the Retiro, all wrought iron balconies, hand-woven carpets and chandeliers that have been there since the beginning. Mandarin Oriental's recent renovation kept the bones - the grand staircase, the high corniced ceilings - while lightening the palette and adding the wellness centre and Dacosta's restaurants. The lobby still has the hush of old money, doormen in tailcoats, tea served under gilt mirrors. It draws a guest who wants Madrid's most formal, most historic address, steps from the Prado.

Guests who want the grandest, most old-world version of Madrid luxury and don't mind paying for it.

The Madrid EDITION

The EDITION, in a converted former bank building on Plaza de Celenque, does Ian Schrager's usual trick: strip a grand old shell down to stone and dark wood, then fill it with low lighting, brass fittings and a nightlife-driven ground floor that turns into one of the city's livelier hotel bars after dark. It sits right in the pedestrian core near Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía, noisier and younger streets than the Retiro end of town. The rooftop pool and bar are the draw here, along with a billiards room and garden that read more clubby than palatial.

Guests who want a stylish, sceney central base with a rooftop, at roughly half the price.

Booking the EDITION over the Ritz means giving up the Ritz's dedicated wellness centre with vitality pool and steam room, and its five-restaurant culinary programme under a named chef, in exchange for the EDITION's rooftop and a livelier, more central address.

The Ritz is the more beautiful building by a wide margin - a genuine Belle Époque palace versus a well-executed contemporary reskin - but the EDITION is the more fun room to be in after 11pm.

“Exceptional Compassion and Service — Thank You, Lina”

I am incredibly grateful to The Madrid EDITION, and especially to Lina, for the kindness, understanding, and compassion shown to me when I was unexpectedly unable to travel to Madrid. Having to cancel a much-anticipated trip was already very disappointing, but the way Lina handled our situation made such a difference. She listened, understood the circumstances, and kindly assisted with refunding our stay. It was a
