The honest take

Park Hyatt Kyoto sits in Higashiyama, a few minutes' walk from Kodai-ji and the Gion lanes, and costs $1,708 against Roku's $883 for the same night. Roku, in the quieter Kinugasa hills near Kinkaku-ji, has the higher review count for confidence but a slightly lower guest score, 9.4 against 9.7. The Park Hyatt has a hot tub Roku doesn't; Roku has an outdoor pool the Park Hyatt lacks. Book the Park Hyatt if the Higashiyama address and that score matter more than the price gap; book Roku if you want mountain views, a pool, and to keep half your budget.

The look and the feel

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Kengo Kuma designed this one, and it shows in the way the building refuses to compete with the temple roofs around it: dark timber, stone, and a lot of restraint, folded into the slope of Higashiyama so the Kodai-ji five-storey pagoda seems to hover just past the window. The lobby runs low and quiet, warm light on wood grain rather than marble and gilt, and the whole place reads more like a well-funded ryokan than a Western five-star. Rooms lean into that same palette, wood-lined, deep tubs, little in the way of ornament. It draws a guest who wants Kyoto's old city on foot and is happy to pay for the address as much as the room.

Guests who want to walk to Gion and the Higashiyama temples and are willing to pay top rate for that proximity.

ROKU KYOTO

Roku is also a Kuma-adjacent, contemporary-Japanese build, but it sits up in the Kinugasa hills near Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, further from the geisha-district crowds and closer to pine forest and quiet mountain light. The listing points to an outdoor pool and gardens, balconied rooms with mountain views, and the same stripped-back materiality Kyoto's newer luxury hotels favour: timber, stone, low horizontal lines. It's built for lingering on-site rather than darting out to temples every hour, a resort mood rather than a townhouse one.

Guests who want pool, garden and mountain view over a hillside resort, and don't mind being further from the old town's bars and shrines.

At $883 against $1,708, Roku gives up the hot tub and the Higashiyama walking address, trading it for a pool and roughly half the nightly cost.

The Park Hyatt's setting among Kodai-ji's rooftops is the more beautiful place to simply stand in, even if Roku's pool and hillside calm make it the easier one to relax in.

“Leaving Japan on a high note!”

Park Hyatt is a great gem in the Gion district. Situated in a charming and picturesque area it was a wonderful stay for the last leg of our Japan visit. It is a bit farther from the main parts of Kyoto where restaurants were open later for dinner, but everything was a quick cab ride away. For lunch there are some great hidden restaurants to explore which were walkable from the hotel. There were also some great cultur

“Gorgeous room, serene stay, amazing food, best concierge & housekeeping”

Not enough wonderful things I could say about this magical place. From concierge, to food, to absolutely stunning room (we had corner garden suite) , we were in heaven. So peaceful, serene, our stay inspired us in so many ways.

“A Bridge to Another Kind of Kyoto”

Although I have visited Japan on numerous occasions, this was my first time in Kyoto, and thus my first encounter with this particular property. It would perhaps be fair to say that the resort does not place itself in immediate dialogue with the city’s more frequented destinations. For those who may wish to explore Kyoto’s major sites at a more leisurely pace, the journey to and from the resort may require a certain

“Beautiful Hotel with Great Staffs”

Roku Kyoto Hotel gave us one of the best hotel-staying experience. The hotel itself is really beautiful, especially at night. Everyone is well trained and warm. We feel good about every moment at the hotel, from check-in process, to Tenjin (the onsite restaurant and bar), the hot spring pool and poolside sauna, the nearby Japanese garden that’s free for hotel guests, and concierge service that made reservations fo
