The honest take

Both sit almost on top of each other near Central Park, and both cost roughly the same, around $1,600 a night. Park Hyatt has the higher guest rating and the only pool and hot tub of the two, plus a quieter, more contemporary feel. The Plaza has far more reviews, a lower score, and no listed spa facilities, but it has the name, the lobby, and Fifth Avenue outside the door. Book Park Hyatt for comfort and wellness, The Plaza for the occasion of staying there.

The look and the feel

Park Hyatt New York

Park Hyatt New York occupies a slim Christian de Portzamparc tower on 57th Street, and the interiors, by Yabu Pushelberg, favour warm limestone, bronze detailing and quiet, tailored rooms with views down over Central Park. The lobby is hushed rather than grand: low light, dark wood, a bar that draws a discreet after-work crowd rather than tourists. It reads as a hotel for people who want five-star comfort without spectacle, closer to a private club than a landmark.

Park Hyatt suits travellers who want quiet, modern five-star polish and don't need to be near the postcard version of New York.

The Plaza

The Plaza is the 1907 Beaux-Arts pile on Fifth Avenue, all mansard roofs, gilded ceilings and the Palm Court's marble columns and stained glass, a room built for afternoon tea to be a performance. Rooms now carry Fifth Avenue's later renovation gloss, with 24-karat gold-plated bathroom fixtures, though the building's bones are the real draw. It is loud with history and tourists both, the kind of hotel where the lobby is a destination in itself and Eloise references are unavoidable.

The Plaza suits people who want to stay inside a genuine Manhattan landmark and don't mind sharing the lobby with camera phones.

At a near-identical price, The Plaza gives up the pool and hot tub that Park Hyatt offers, so anyone wanting to swim or soak has no option there.

The Plaza is the more beautiful and characterful building by a wide margin, a genuine piece of Gilded Age New York, while Park Hyatt is the better-run, more comfortable room to sleep in.

“Perfect Start to a Milestone Family Journey”

Our one-night stay at Park Hyatt New York on July 10, 2026, was the perfect start to a once-in-a-lifetime family trip celebrating a milestone birthday for our son. From New York, we would continue on to Germany, Austria, Jordan, and Egypt, and we wanted the first hotel of the journey to be special. Park Hyatt New York exceeded our expectations in nearly every way. Despite having no Hyatt status, the hotel recognized

“Excellent stay and will return”

Excellent visit to the Park Hyatt. This was a new hotel for and we will be returning. The hotel was clean and had a newer feeling. Hallways and doorways were clean and inviting.

“A true example of excellent service recovery!”

As a loyal World of Hyatt Globalist member, I have always regarded Park Hyatt as one of my favorite luxury hotel brands, which is why I had very high expectations for my stay at Park Hyatt New York. Unfortunately, my stay did not begin as expected. After returning to the hotel in the afternoon, I discovered that my original room had an extremely strong chemical odor, making it uncomfortable to stay inside. After spe

“There are hotels that offer five-star service, and then there is The Plaza!!!”

There are hotels that offer five-star service, and then there is The Plaza. My recent stay was one of the most memorable hotel experiences I have ever had. I wanted to surprise my wife during our stay, as I had purchased a beautiful Cartier piece of jewelry for our anniversary on the day we arrived. I reached out to the Guest Experience team a few days before our arrival, and from that moment on, they went above and

“Excellent stay, would definitely stay here again.”

Everything! Clean rooms, big rooms, excellent service.

Not much - double espressos at the bar were quite pricey (2 for $50) , however perhaps expected at a nice hotel.
