The honest take
Book the Pulitzer if you want to be in the historic canal ring, in a hotel stitched together from 25 17th and 18th-century houses, with a pool of guests who rate it 9.4 across nearly 1,750 reviews. Book the Okura if you want a pool, a spa and Ciel Bleu's Michelin-starred views, at $410 against the Pulitzer's $609, in a 1971 tower south of the centre near the RAI. Both are five-star and both score well, but they are different kinds of stay 2.7km apart: one is a warren of gabled houses, the other a modernist high-rise with a Japanese owner's polish. The Pulitzer's higher price buys location and atmosphere; the Okura's lower price buys wellness facilities and river views from height.
The look and the feel
Pulitzer Amsterdam
The Pulitzer is a maze of 25 canal houses knocked together along Prinsengracht, so no two corridors run quite straight and you climb odd half-flights between wings. Rooms mix Dutch antiques and gilt-framed portraits with contemporary furniture and DS & Durga toiletries, a deliberate collision of old merchant-house Amsterdam and a design hotel's instincts. Restaurant Jansz. does modern-Dutch cooking under exposed beams, and the bar has the low, close feel of a house rather than a hotel lobby. It draws a crowd who want the canal ring outside their window and don't mind a slightly labyrinthine building in exchange for it.
Travellers who want to walk out the door onto a canal and stay somewhere with real architectural history, even at a premium.
Hotel Okura Amsterdam
The Okura is a 1971 tower on Ferdinand Bolstraat, well south of the canal belt, built low-slung public rooms and a soaring lobby in dark wood, marble and brass that reads as international five-star rather than distinctly Dutch. It houses two Michelin-starred restaurants including Ciel Bleu on the 23rd floor, an indoor pool and spa tub, and a scale of business and event facilities the Pulitzer doesn't attempt. The atmosphere is polished and quiet rather than characterful, aimed at business travellers and those who want views over the city and full wellness facilities rather than a boutique feel.
Travellers who want a pool, spa and top-tier dining under one roof, with a lower rate, and don't mind being outside the old centre.
At the lower price, the Okura's guests give up the pool and spa tub that the Pulitzer doesn't have on its own list, though the Okura compensates with a stronger overall facilities set including the indoor pool itself, so read this as the Pulitzer being the one missing pool access, not the Okura.
The Pulitzer is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, because it's a real historic building with rooms and light that a 1971 tower, however polished, can't fake.

“It was A M A Z I N G”
The service provided to us was extra ordinary. Started with warm welcome from Ashraf at the door to lovely check in by Aicha and Ezra. Were very attentive. Same for check out with Rochanie.
Big thanks also to Roxana who prepared the room perfectly.

“Luxury service at the highest level”
Great care is given to all guests. When I arrived the front desk checked me in immediately and when I requested help with a dinner reservation pre-arrival they arranged a spot for me at the Yamazato Restaurant, a Michelin 1 star. While it was listed as full they double checked the waitlist and found a cancellation that evening. Amazing service, the 23rd floor bar staff was fabulous. The restaurant was top marks. W
