The honest take

Pulitzer Amsterdam runs $596 a night with a 9.4 guest rating from 1,746 reviews, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is $549 with a 9.0 from 1,306 reviews, so The Grand is both cheaper and the one with a pool, sauna and hammam on site. If wellness facilities matter, book The Grand. If you want the more distinctive building and the higher guest score, pay the difference for the Pulitzer.

The look and the feel

Pulitzer Amsterdam

The Pulitzer is stitched together from twenty-five converted 17th- and 18th-century canal houses along the Prinsengracht, so the floor plan zigzags, ceilings drop and rise, and staircases turn up in odd places between old brick party walls and exposed beams. The interiors mix that raw Dutch Golden Age fabric with a curated, art-forward hand: contemporary artwork, vintage telephones, mismatched antiques and DS & Durga toiletries in the rooms, so it reads more like a well-funded private collection than a chain hotel. Restaurant Jansz. leans into modern-Dutch cooking with local ingredients, and the whole place has a slightly bohemian, gallery-owner sensibility rather than corporate polish.

People who want a hotel that feels like wandering through a converted canal-house art collection, close to the Jordaan and Nine Streets.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

The Grand occupies a former royal palace and city admiralty building on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, in the heart of the old city, and its public rooms carry that civic grandeur: high ceilings, formal proportions, a blend of Dutch historical detail with French contemporary decoration under the Sofitel Legend banner. Butler service comes with the 52 suites, Bridges does seafood, Oriole Garden Bistro serves Mediterranean food, and there's a cocktail bar alongside a spa with an indoor pool, sauna and hammam, plus a garden and terrace, so the whole operation feels more like an institution than an eccentric's house.

People who want palace-scale grandeur, a proper spa with a pool, and butler service in the old city centre.

At $596 the Pulitzer costs more and has no pool or golf facility, while the Grand at $549 gives you both a spa pool and access to golf on top of being the lower price.

The Pulitzer is the more characterful place to actually be in, because its patchwork of centuries-old canal houses gives every corridor and room a different personality, where the Grand's grandeur, while real, reads as one consistent, formal statement rather than a series of discoveries.

“Wonderful relaxing stay with great service”

Excellent location. Spacious room

The second bathroom was so big they could have put a shower in it instead of just a toilet. Also the basin the second bathroom was extremely tiny

“Except for Diego the disagreable waiter the rest was excellent”

I like the location the building the special amability of nearly all the staff and the restaurants

The bathroom having the toilette with no place to wash your hands and having to cross the shower to do so or step outside and enter again, and the step to go to the toilet for me is dangerous. A special mention of one waiter in the breakfast we had on the first morning. My husband was asking for his coffee with hot mi
