The honest take

The Carlyle is cheaper at $1,378 versus $1,556, rated higher by guests (9.2 vs 8.8), and has a spa the St. Regis lacks. The St. Regis counters with parking and a bar the Carlyle doesn't list, plus butler service and a Fifth Avenue address at 55th Street. Book the Carlyle if you want the better rate and the better reviews; book the St. Regis if valet parking and round-the-clock butler service matter more to you than a spa.

The look and the feel

The Carlyle

The Carlyle occupies an Art Deco tower from 1930 on the Upper East Side, and it still feels like the private club it was built to be: Dorothy Draper had a hand in the original decor, and the lobby retains that dark, clubby glamour of marble floors, brass fittings and low lamplight. Bemelmans Bar, with its murals by Ludwig Bemelmans himself, is the reason half of New York still drinks there after ten. Rooms lean toward chintz, mahogany and a kind of old-money hush rather than anything showy, and the Metropolitan Museum and Central Park are a short walk north.

Right for guests who want old New York atmosphere, a serious bar, and quieter luxury near the park and the museums.

The St. Regis New York

The St. Regis sits at Two East 55th Street off Fifth Avenue, a Beaux-Arts building from 1904 with a lobby built for the age of the Astors: gilded ceilings, crystal chandeliers, marble underfoot. The King Cole Bar, with its Maxfield Parrish mural, anchors the ground floor, and the whole place still runs on the ritual of 24-hour butler service that the hotel was among the first in America to offer. It reads grander and more formal than the Carlyle, built for guests who want ceremony with their stay.

Right for guests who want Fifth Avenue address, formal butler service, and don't mind paying more for the ceremony.

At the lower price, the Carlyle gives up the parking and dedicated bar listed at the St. Regis, though it holds its own with Bemelmans regardless of what's on the amenities sheet.

The Carlyle is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, its Deco restraint and Bemelmans murals ageing better than the St. Regis's gilt formality.

“Kind and attentive staff during the visit, cold room, scabies following visit”

I came here for two nights with my daughter and stayed in a room on the 12th floor with two twin beds. The room would not warm up due to the cold temperatures outside. The staff was very responsive and sent up a very kind technician immediately to make sure the heat was working correctly. They told us that due to the building being so old, there wasn't more they could do besides provide space heaters, which helped s

“Wonderful hotel”

I have stayed multiple times at the Carlyle for pleasure, but this stay was different as I needed to be near the hospital where my husband was having surgery. The entire staff was kind, patient, and extraordinarily accommodating. Every morning at breakfast they would even make a special bag of the daily papers and pastries to bring to him at the hospital without my even asking. This is just a small example of how the

“Good but not great”

There are “hotel people” and Air BnB people. We are definitely hotel people, especially iconic hotels like the Carlyle, which is Rosewood branded. We have been fortunate to stay at top hotels around the world, like The Imperial Hotel in Vienna, the Peninsula in Paris and Bangkok, and Four Seasons around the globe, among many others. Our initial impression of the Carlyle was unfortunately not great, due to the lady

“Fantastic Food and Exceptional Service”

We had a wonderful lunch at The St. Regis New York on 28th July, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish. I visited with my friend and her toddler, and the food was absolutely delicious. What really made our lunch so memorable, though, was the incredible service. Every member of staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make my friend’s child feel so special. A particular

“It is a 4 star hotel, at the most”

First, forget about the butler experience. It does not exist. We called them and they never came. The building, despite a recent renovation, is old and in poor condition. The service is indifferent. Our room was only available at 6 pm despite a pre-planned 2 pm arrival. Bathroom does not have a rain shower and bath products are from different brands, most of them unknown, no consistency. There is no liquid soap in th
