The honest take

Book the Ritz-Carlton if the sky-high harbour views and two Michelin-starred restaurants matter more than the extra USD 221 a night. The Conrad, three kilometres away in Admiralty, still delivers Victoria Harbour and Peak views, five-star service and its own strong dining line-up at a noticeably lower price. Both sit around the same guest satisfaction range but the Ritz-Carlton pulls ahead on rating and adds a rooftop the Conrad lacks. For most travellers the Conrad is the smarter booking; for a special stay or dinner reservation at Tin Lung Heen, the Ritz-Carlton earns its premium.

The look and the feel

The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton occupies the upper floors of the International Commerce Centre, one of the tallest buildings in the world, so the whole experience is vertical: lifts that pressurise your ears, a lobby on floor 103, rooms that start above where most hotels end. The interiors go for hushed maximalism, dark timber, brass fittings, deep carpet, floor-to-ceiling glass that turns Victoria Harbour into wallpaper. Ozone, the bar near the top, is the room people come for, all cool light and a horizon that never resolves into a ceiling. It draws a crowd who want the tallest possible version of Hong Kong, business travellers on expense accounts and couples marking an anniversary.

Guests who want the most dramatic possible view of Hong Kong and are happy to pay for it.

Conrad Hong Kong

The Conrad sits inside Pacific Place in Admiralty, a mall-and-office complex, so the arrival is calmer and more grounded, all polished stone and a lobby lounge that functions as much of Hong Kong's business meeting spot. Rooms are handsome rather than dramatic, warm wood tones, big windows toward the harbour or the Peak, the kind of five-star comfort that doesn't ask you to notice it. Nicholini's and Golden Leaf give it real dining credentials without the theatre of a tasting menu, and the Garden Cafe buffet is the sort of reliable, unpretentious meal a hotel like this should offer. It suits guests who want a proper five-star base close to Central without paying for spectacle.

Guests who want reliable five-star comfort and a central Admiralty address at a lower price.

The Conrad, at USD 411 against USD 632, gives up the rooftop that the Ritz-Carlton has, along with the sheer altitude and the two Michelin-starred dining rooms that come with those upper floors.

The Ritz-Carlton is the more striking place to be, simply because being 103 floors up changes how a room feels, and few hotels anywhere can offer that.

“During at the highest bar in the world.”

We had four of their delicious cocktails. Great experience. Norween was very kind and helpful.

Lovely cocktails with a great service and friendly staff, Norween was extremely friendly.

10/10

“Great afternoon tea”

This was my first time here. The view was amazing, the tea was excellent and I loved the Earl Grey so much I wanted to buy some to take home. The pastries were also delicious and generous in portion size. The staff (especially Mr. Freeman) was lovely and very polite, and even offered complimentary treats. I was impressed with everything. I had a wonderful time and will definitely return.
