The honest take
Both sit on Canal Street a few blocks apart and pull identical 9.1 guest ratings, so this comes down to what you want beyond a good bed. The Ritz-Carlton costs $613 a night and gives you a full-service spa, a hot tub, and pet-friendly rooms; the JW Marriott is $298 and gives up all three but still has more reviews behind its score. For most travellers the JW is the better booking — same location, same satisfaction, less than half the cost. Pay the difference only if the spa and pampering are the point of the trip.
The look and the feel
The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz occupies the old Maison Blanche department store building, a 1908 Beaux-Arts pile with a domed rotunda that the hotel restored as its centrepiece, so the lobby has that layered, formal hush of old New Orleans commerce turned hospitality — marble floors, gilt ironwork, chandeliers doing a lot of the talking. The Davenport Lounge runs live jazz most nights, which fits the city outside better than most hotel bars manage. Rooms lean toward brocade and dark wood, plush robes, the kind of minibar stocked like someone assumed you'd forgotten to pack.
Travellers who want the spa, the jazz lounge, and the sense of staying inside a restored piece of the city's commercial history.
JW Marriott New Orleans
The JW is a straightforward big-box high-rise hotel on Canal, modern and glassy rather than historic, with large windows and ergonomic workspaces that read more business traveller than French Quarter romance. The lobby lounge does handcrafted cocktails and there's a Fogo de Chao attached for the carnivorous, but the design language throughout is contemporary hotel neutral — comfortable, unfussy, not trying to be a period piece.
Travellers who want a reliable, well-run modern room on the same strip of Canal Street for less than half the price.
The JW's guests give up the Ritz's spa, hot tub, and pet-friendly rooms — everything else, including location and review score, is essentially a wash.
The Ritz is the more beautiful place to stand in, because its rotunda and Beaux-Arts bones give it a sense of occasion the JW's glass-and-carpet lobby simply doesn't attempt.

“Great location”
The location was excellent. Very central and all the main areas were walking distance.
Carpets were old and rooms seemed dated for a ritz property
Bruno is absolutely amazing and he accommodated us at the very last minute with rooms and service. Justin was also spectacular. We truly appreciate them stepping in. Will definitely be back!

“Great hotel-need to fix gym”
The JW is one of my favorite hotels. As we are a Tulane family, we stay there a lot. LOVE the doormen-they are hysterical, friendly and the nicest people.
The gym however was disappointing this last time. One half barely had a/c. The 2 Peloton bikes did not work: the seat on one would not stay up (liability for sure) and its pedals were not aligned, the other was not calibrated. I hope they take care of this ASAP as
