The honest take

Book the Island Shangri-La: it's $224 a night cheaper, has more reviews at a nearly identical rating, and comes with rooms freshly redone by Tristan Auer. The St. Regis sits right on the Wan Chai waterfront with an outdoor pool, which the Shangri-La listing doesn't mention, and that harbourside position plus Marriott luxury polish justifies its premium for some. For most travellers wanting a beautiful, well-run five-star base with direct mall and MTR access, the Shangri-La is the smarter booking.

The look and the feel

The St. Regis Hong Kong

The St. Regis Hong Kong is the brand's newer, more theatrical outpost, done up in the house style of gilt accents, deep jewel-toned upholstery and marble corridors that aim for old-world grandeur rather than restraint. It sits directly on Harbour Drive in Wan Chai, so the outdoor pool and many rooms look straight across Victoria Harbour to the Kowloon skyline. The lobby and butler service lean into ceremony - afternoon tea, a hushed check-in ritual - and it draws a crowd that wants full-dress luxury and a view to match the price.

Travellers who want a harbourfront pool, waterfront rooms, and the full St. Regis ceremony of butlers and afternoon tea.

Island Shangri-La

The Island Shangri-La occupies the upper floors of a tower on Supreme Court Road in Admiralty, built around an eleven-storey atrium hung with a vast Chinese landscape painting that's one of the largest of its kind, visible from the glass lifts as they rise. Tristan Auer's recent refit brought a calmer, more contemporary hand to the guestrooms - low daybeds, bespoke pantries, a quieter palette than the older Shangri-La house style - while public spaces retain a sense of scale and dark wood formality. Its position atop Pacific Place means the street outside is mall and glass towers rather than harbour front, and the crowd is business travellers and shoppers as much as leisure guests chasing a view.

Guests who want newly designed rooms by a name interior designer, direct mall and metro access, and better value at nearly the same rating.

On the facilities listed, the Shangri-La doesn't advertise an outdoor pool or the same waterfront position as the St. Regis, though it compensates with its Horizon Club lounge and atrium scale; the real gap is address and view rather than amenity count.

The Island Shangri-La is the more striking place to stand in, thanks to that towering atrium painting and Auer's newly calmed rooms, though the St. Regis has the better view to look out at.

“Wonderful Afternoon Tea at The St. Regis Hong Kong”

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Signature Afternoon Tea at The Drawing Room. The elegant setting and unique dim sum-style trolley, where we could choose our own savouries and sweets, made it special. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious, especially the light scones. Special thanks to Dexter for his excellent service — attentive, friendly, and thoughtful throughout. He made our afternoon even more e

Clean, great location right in pacific place which is a very short walk to admiralty MTR station , very helpful staff

The location of the lobby is a tad inconvenient when coming from the MTR - have to take lifts within pacific place mall up to level 5 then take another escalator/lift up to level 6 where the lobby is. Also the bathroom was slightly old, bath tub and shower curtain kind instead of an isolated shower cubicle so water goe

A really nice hotel with everything you need. Like the location in Central and easy to get about. The staff were really helpful and a string quartet in the lobby was a classy touch!
