The honest take

Book the Ritz-Carlton if you want the highest hotel in the world and a rooftop bar to prove it, at $632 a night against the St. Regis's $713. Both sit at 9.8 with strong review counts, but the Ritz-Carlton has nearly three times the review volume, suggesting a bigger, more tested operation. The St. Regis is the more traditional, harbour-level luxury stay with a pool and Wan Chai's promenade on its doorstep. Choose by whether you want to look down on Hong Kong from the 118th floor or sit beside the water at sea level.

The look and the feel

The St. Regis Hong Kong

The St. Regis occupies a new-build tower on the Wan Chai waterfront, all glass and stone with the brand's usual formula of butler service and gilded, slightly hushed interiors. Expect dark wood panelling, chandeliers, and the St. Regis signature of afternoon tea in a room with harbour light coming through floor-to-ceiling windows. It reads as classic five-star rather than experimental: comfortable, correct, built for guests who want the ritual of a grand hotel without surprises. The outdoor pool and fitness centre keep things grounded at street level rather than sky-high.

Guests who want a traditional grand-hotel stay at sea level, with a pool, and easy access to Wan Chai's waterfront and convention district.

The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton occupies the upper third of the International Commerce Centre, one of the tallest buildings on earth, with guest rooms starting on floor 102. The lobby and public rooms are perched above the clouds on typhoon days, all polished stone, dark timber and enormous windows framing Victoria Harbour like a permanent widescreen film. Ozone bar on the 118th floor and the rooftop give the place its real character, a giddy, vertiginous glamour that no ground-level hotel can match. The two Michelin-starred restaurants and the Almas Caviar Bar push the whole property toward spectacle rather than quiet comfort.

Guests who want the theatre of Hong Kong's skyline, serious dining, and a rooftop bar, and don't mind being 100-plus floors up.

The St. Regis, despite costing more, has no hot tub and no rooftop, so guests give up the vertical spectacle and the extra soak that the Ritz-Carlton offers for less money.

The Ritz-Carlton is the more extraordinary place to be, simply because no other hotel on the planet puts a harbour view of that scale directly outside a guest room window at floor 118.

“Wonderful Afternoon Tea at The St. Regis Hong Kong”

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Signature Afternoon Tea at The Drawing Room. The elegant setting and unique dim sum-style trolley, where we could choose our own savouries and sweets, made it special. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious, especially the light scones. Special thanks to Dexter for his excellent service — attentive, friendly, and thoughtful throughout. He made our afternoon even more e

“Great afternoon tea”

This was my first time here. The view was amazing, the tea was excellent and I loved the Earl Grey so much I wanted to buy some to take home. The pastries were also delicious and generous in portion size. The staff (especially Mr. Freeman) was lovely and very polite, and even offered complimentary treats. I was impressed with everything. I had a wonderful time and will definitely return.
