The honest take

Book the Okura. At $410 against $1,410 a night, it gives you a five-star Amsterdam stay with a Michelin two-star restaurant, indoor pool and spa, at less than a third of the price. The Waldorf Astoria is the more extraordinary building and the higher-rated stay, and if budget is not the question it is the one to choose, but the gap here is too large to ignore. Pets aside, the Okura's facility list matches the Waldorf's; the difference is address, architecture and the intangible weight of staying inside a UNESCO canal ring versus a 1971 tower south of the centre.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

Six linked 17th-century canal houses on the Herengracht, the grandest stretch of Amsterdam's grachtengordel, with the kind of gabled brick facade that stops tourists mid-stride. Inside, the restoration keeps period detail, ornate plasterwork, chandeliers, marble, alongside a Guerlain spa and a courtyard garden that most canal hotels simply don't have room for. Peacock Alley and the Vault Bar lean into old-world formality, dark wood and hush, the kind of place where the staff know your room number before you say it. It draws a guest who wants Amsterdam's golden age wrapped around them, not a view of it from a tower.

Guests who want to sleep inside Amsterdam's architectural history and don't mind paying for the privilege.

Hotel Okura Amsterdam

A 1971 modernist high-rise on Ferdinand Bolstraat, well south of the canal ring, built for the era of jumbo jets and Japanese business travel and still carrying that clean, formal, slightly corporate calm. The top-floor restaurant Ciel Bleu has held two Michelin stars for years and looks down over the city rather than up at gabled facades, a different kind of Amsterdam view entirely. Public spaces favour polished stone, dark wood panelling and quiet lounges over ornament, with a Japanese-inflected restraint running through the design. It suits a guest who wants five-star service and serious food without paying for a landmark address.

Guests who want two-Michelin-star dining and proper five-star service at a fraction of the canal-ring price.

The Okura loses nothing on the facility list, pets aside, but it loses the address: no 17th-century canal frontage, no courtyard garden, no UNESCO backdrop outside the window.

The Waldorf Astoria is the more beautiful place to simply stand in, six canal palaces of gabled brick and gilded plasterwork beat any modernist tower for sheer atmosphere.

“It was A M A Z I N G”

The service provided to us was extra ordinary. Started with warm welcome from Ashraf at the door to lovely check in by Aicha and Ezra. Were very attentive. Same for check out with Rochanie. Big thanks also to Roxana who prepared the room perfectly. If you seek feeling cared for and at home - this is the place to stay!

“Luxury service at the highest level”

Great care is given to all guests. When I arrived the front desk checked me in immediately and when I requested help with a dinner reservation pre-arrival they arranged a spot for me at the Yamazato Restaurant, a Michelin 1 star. While it was listed as full they double checked the waitlist and found a cancellation that evening. Amazing service, the 23rd floor bar staff was fabulous. The restaurant was top marks. W
