The honest take

Dream South Beach is $167 a night with a rooftop pool and bar, higher guest rating, and a livelier address at the edge of the Art Deco entertainment strip. Fontainebleau is $367, more than double, and its size buys spa, fitness centre and a hot tub alongside six pools and nine restaurants. If you want a resort to disappear into for a few days, pay for the Fontainebleau. If you want a stylish base near the action and don't need a gym or spa, Dream is the better use of money.

The look and the feel

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

The Fontainebleau's back is the famous curved facade Morris Lapidus built in 1954, all sweeping concrete and glass, restored and expanded since but still recognisably his showpiece of Miami Modern excess. The lobby runs long and theatrical, with the bowtie floor pattern, oversized chandeliers, and a scale meant to make arriving feel like an event. Outside, the grounds sprawl across six pools, cabana rows with butler service, and a nightclub, closer to a small city than a hotel. It draws families, conventioneers and anyone who wants Miami Beach as spectacle rather than as a quiet strip of sand.

Guests who want a full resort experience with spa, gym, multiple restaurants and beachfront cabana service, and are willing to pay for it.

Dream South Beach

Dream South Beach sits in a converted Art Deco building on Collins Avenue, given a nightlife-forward, boutique treatment: a rooftop pool with an infinity edge, a rooftop bar, and HIGHBAR, a lounge the listing describes as Studio 54-influenced, all mirrors and late-night energy. Rooms lean fashion-forward rather than resort-scale, and the ground floor holds Naked Taco, a tequila-heavy Mexican spot rather than a hotel's usual catch-all restaurant. It's a smaller, denser build than the Fontainebleau, built for guests who want to walk out the door into South Beach's bars and clubs rather than stay poolside all day.

Guests who want a stylish, well-located base for South Beach's nightlife without paying resort prices.

At $167, Dream South Beach goes without a spa, a fitness centre and a hot tub, all of which the Fontainebleau has; what you get instead is its own rooftop pool and bar, which the Fontainebleau's listing doesn't mention.

The Fontainebleau is the more architecturally significant building and the bigger spectacle, but Dream's smaller Deco shell and rooftop scene make for a more atmospheric, less institutional place to actually spend an evening.

“The best Hyatt in SOBE”

Dream South Beach exceeded expectations! From the moment we arrived, Colin provided a fantastic check-in experience and made us feel welcome right away. The pool area was posh and stylish, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring Miami Beach. Also the Taco Tuesday special ROCKS! The female bartender that worked the rooftop on July 28th went the extra mile by personally going downstairs to check if the chips were gl
