The honest take

Book the Fontainebleau. It costs a fifth of the EDITION's rate, carries a strong 8/10 across 4,344 reviews, and offers six pools, a hot tub, cabanas and nine restaurants on the same stretch of Collins Avenue. The EDITION has the higher guest score and the more considered design, but nothing in its facility list justifies a $1,661 nightly gap. This is a case where the more expensive hotel is selling atmosphere and scarcity, not more hotel.

The look and the feel

The Miami Beach EDITION

The Miami Beach EDITION occupies the old Seville hotel, gutted and rebuilt by Ian Schrager with Studio Munge doing the interiors: terrazzo floors, brass fittings, a lobby that plays with double-height ceilings and a hanging chandelier of glass discs. It's the property with the ice rink and bowling alley tucked in among the pools, a deliberately odd mix of camp and restraint. The Matador Room, done up in dark wood and botanical prints, leans into old Havana glamour rather than the white-on-white Miami cliché. It draws a design-literate crowd who want the boutique EDITION formula rather than a full resort experience.

Guests who want a smaller, design-forward hotel with a distinct point of view and don't mind paying heavily for it.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

The Fontainebleau is Morris Lapidus's 1954 landmark, the building with the bowtie floor plan and the sweeping staircase to nowhere that became shorthand for Miami Modern excess. The lobby still has that theatrical scale, curved walls, terrazzo underfoot, a sense of postwar optimism rendered in marble and gold leaf. It's grown into a proper resort complex since, with six pools and nine restaurants spread across the grounds, so the original Lapidus rooms now sit alongside newer towers. The crowd is wider and louder than at the EDITION, families and groups as much as design tourists, especially around the cabana decks.

Guests who want scale, beach resort amenities and Lapidus's original architecture at a fraction of the cost.

The Fontainebleau, for a fraction of the price, only gives up the EDITION's ice rink, bowling alley and petite spa; everything else on offer, pools, dining, nightlife, it matches or exceeds.

The Fontainebleau's Lapidus lobby is the more genuinely beautiful space in Miami architectural history, but the EDITION is the more coherent and intimate place to actually spend an evening.
