The Setai runs $1,475 a night against the St. Regis Bal Harbour's $975, a $500 gap for two hotels ten kilometres apart on the same Collins Avenue. The Setai has the guest-rating edge, 9.1 from 177 reviews, while the St. Regis carries no listed score across 397 reviews. If budget rules, book the St. Regis and get a hot tub the Setai does not have; if the room itself is the point, the Setai's smaller, more considered footprint wins.
The Setai occupies a restored 1930s Art Deco building on Collins Avenue, its lobby dim and low-lit, all dark wood, black granite and bronze against candlelight, closer to a Southeast Asian temple anteroom than a Miami hotel. The suites carry that through with teak, silk and stone in warm neutral tones, ceiling fans, and a quiet that feels deliberate against South Beach's noise outside. Three infinity pools step down toward the ocean in a row, an unusual and photogenic arrangement, and the crowd here skews fashion and film industry rather than families.
Design-minded travellers who want a small, atmospheric Deco property in the thick of South Beach.
The St. Regis Bal Harbour sits further north in the quieter, more residential Bal Harbour enclave, a large-scale resort with interiors by Yabu Pushelberg, whose work tends toward cool, tailored modernism rather than ornament. Rooms are done in pale woods and neutral fabrics with flat-screen TVs and, in some, kitchenettes and full ocean-view balconies. The spa runs to 14,000 square feet with eleven treatment rooms, a steam room and Finnish saunas, and the St Regis Bar with its live music and wine vault gives the property a more clubby, adult evening life than a boutique Deco hotel can offer.
Guests who want scale, a serious spa, and a quieter Bal Harbour address at a lower nightly rate.
The St. Regis, at the lower price, has no listed guest score to check against its 397 reviews, and it trades the Setai's compact three-pool Deco intimacy for a bigger, more conventional resort footprint.
The Setai is the more beautiful place to actually be in, its restored Art Deco shell and stepped infinity pools giving it a character no amount of square footage at the St. Regis matches.

“Lovely hotel but construction noise awful”
Lovely hotel. Well located. Pool area very nice. Room also very nice.
Major construction next to the hotel so very noisy from 6am. Major problem for anyone on a holiday. Hotel did compensate us but we wish they and booking.com had told us before we went so we could make an informed choice. Was too late once we arrived.
Excelente service and staff . Fantastic hotel
“Awesome service at the beach (St. Regis bal Harbour)”
Emmanuel and Maryna at the beach provided amazing service. Emmanuel was so attentive for making sure we had the perfect beach setup. Maryna was hustling make sure everyone had enough food or drinks in 100 degree weather.
“Heloisa at Tranquility Pool”
Heloisa did a great job! She has a great work ethic, and an even better personality. Very helpful!
“Perfection”
My very favorite hotel. This was my second stay and it was somehow better than my first stay. The accommodations are perfect, the staff is beyond helpful, and the food is incredible. The room- generally given a slight upgrade with Marriott status. They have the best pillows I've ever used. In fact, I bought a set for my home because I sleep like a baby whenever I stay at this hotel. The bed is also comfy- firm yet c
