The honest take

Both sit at 9.4 with prices $45 apart, essentially a wash on value. Four Seasons Kyoto is the pricier by a whisker at $1,658 and holds a pool, spa and pet allowance the Ritz-Carlton lacks. The Ritz-Carlton at $1,613 has a smaller review base but a location directly on the Kamogawa, walkable to Nijo-jo. Book the Four Seasons for wellness facilities and the tea house garden; book the Ritz-Carlton for the river and easy subway access.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

The Four Seasons sits in Higashiyama beside Myohoin temple, and the hotel was built around a centuries-old pond garden that the architects excavated and restored rather than paved over, so the public rooms look out onto koi, stone and maple through long glass walls. Interiors run to quiet, tea-ceremony restraint: dark timber, shoji-inflected screens, low light, a sushi counter and an actual tea house on the grounds. It draws a guest who wants Kyoto's temple quarter outside the door and does not mind paying for hush.

Travellers who want a temple-district retreat with real garden and spa facilities, and who are travelling with a small pet.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

The Ritz-Carlton sits directly on the Kamogawa, its lower floors and terrace opened toward the river and the hills beyond, a deliberate borrowed-view arrangement common to Kyoto's better hotels. Opened in 2014, the interiors mix Ritz-Carlton polish with regional craft references, kimono-inspired textiles, lacquer accents, and rooms finished with rain showers and Nespresso machines rather than in-room tea ceremony gestures. It suits a guest who wants central Nakagyo, the subway close, and a hotel that feels contemporary rather than monastic.

Travellers who want a riverside address in the middle of the city with fast access to Nijo-jo and the subway network.

At the lower price the Ritz-Carlton gives up the indoor pool, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms that the Four Seasons offers, along with pet allowance; otherwise the facility lists are close.

The Four Seasons is the more beautiful place to sit still in, because the restored pond garden gives its lobby and corridors a stillness that a river view, however good, cannot quite match indoors.

“An Unforgettable Family Stay and Breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto”

We stayed one night at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto using a free-night reward, as the first stop on a two-night, three-day family trip to Kyoto with our 1-year-2-month-old son. I'd previously visited only the lobby lounge along the Kamogawa River, so this was our first time actually staying as guests. What struck us first was how ready the room was for a baby: a crib and a Stokke high chair were already set up, along with

“wonderful stay”

A truly wonderful stay! It is clear that the hotel has very high standards, and everything was carried out with great care and attention. We were lucky to receive an upgrade to a fourth-floor room overlooking the Kamogawa River, and the view was absolutely beautiful. The service was just as impressive. We are quite particular and have stayed at many luxury hotels around the world, but The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto gave u
