The honest take

Book the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills if you want the more considered, quieter luxury hotel experience, at $1,014 a night against the Ritz-Carlton's $854. The Four Seasons has a higher guest rating (9.2, from 248 reviews) and offers a pet allowance, hot tub and bar that the Ritz's listing doesn't mention. The Ritz-Carlton, part of the L.A. Live complex downtown, counters with a rooftop and sits 11.7 km away in a completely different part of the city, closer to Crypto.com Arena and Peacock Theater. Choose on neighbourhood first: Beverly Hills residential calm versus downtown stadium buzz.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

This is a low-rise, discreetly grand hotel on Doheny, the kind of Four Seasons that trades scale for privacy: French doors opening onto private balconies, palm-shaded pool terrace, the hush of a property built for people who don't want to be photographed. The public rooms lean traditional-luxury rather than of-the-moment design, heavy on cream stone, dark wood and soft upholstery, the spa a genuine full-service operation rather than a gesture. It draws industry types, quiet money, and anyone who wants five-star service without a lobby scene.

Right for travellers who want old-school Beverly Hills discretion, a real spa, and don't mind paying more for quiet.

The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton downtown sits inside L.A. Live, stacked in a glass tower alongside the JW Marriott, with the Staples Center energy of the neighbourhood built into the whole experience. Rooms are contemporary and corporate-elegant, espresso machines and designer toiletries rather than character, and the appeal is the address: steps from Crypto.com Arena, three restaurants, a rooftop, poolside bar. It's a hotel for people going to a game or a concert, or who want downtown L.A.'s skyline rather than Beverly Hills hedges outside the window.

Right for anyone attending an event at L.A. Live or Crypto.com Arena who wants a rooftop and a downtown skyline over neighbourhood calm.

The Ritz-Carlton, the cheaper of the two, has no pet allowance, hot tub or standalone bar listed, where the Four Seasons offers all three alongside its higher guest rating.

The Four Seasons is the more beautiful place to actually be in, with its low-rise scale, private balconies and pool terrace, against a glass tower whose main view is the arena it was built to serve.

“Amazing 3 night stay!”

Had the most incredible 3 night stay!! Booked balcony deluxe room and had requested to face back of hotel/high floor since we are light sleepers. Sam in in-house reservations was amazing and our room on 15th floor was the most quiet room ever!! Everyone at hotel super friendly and everything very clean, beautiful decor. We especially loved The Penalty box to watch Cup games. Breakfast and room service also great. Co

“Four Seasons…always a good Choice”

The Four Seasons Hotel on Doheny Drive is a truly wonderful hotel from which to explore beautiful Beverly Hills. The hotel is very well-maintained, the reception staff was friendly, and our Hollywood Suite was spacious and cozy. Since we were staying on the ninth floor, we were able to make wonderful use of the two balconies. On the fourth floor is the pool area, which is spacious for an LA city hotel. A pretty poo

“Old timey Luxury, soon should get a little facelift.”

Long (10 day) business stay at the Four Seasons. Atmosphere: luxurious, yet understated. Harkens back to the early 2000 and one can easily understand why many celebrities opt to stay here, away from prying eyes. The lobby could use a bit of a refresher. Service: top notch, especially Tom the bellman and housekeeping. Check in desk was courteous but nothing extraordinary. Location: decent, but action is at least a 20

“A Five Star Experience”

We spent a day and half at this hotel over Christmas and absolutely loved every minute. This location is modern and stylish and the staff are polished but also very warm. We enjoyed the Club Lounge and amenities. All were top notch. The staff are so kind and charming. Josh in the Lounge and Harrison at the Front Desk were among our favorites. We enjoyed the easy enclosed walk to the J.W. Lobby and the excellent
