The honest take

Book the Park Hyatt Tokyo unless money is genuinely no object: at $1,404 a night against $2,020 for the Four Seasons Otemachi, it gives you three restaurants including the New York Grill, two bars, a spa and pool, and breakfast included, in a Kenzo Tange tower with some of the best views in the city. The Four Seasons is newer, smaller, quieter and marginally better rated, and it adds a hot tub the Park Hyatt lacks, but that is a thin edge for six hundred extra dollars. Both sit in central Tokyo, six and a half kilometres apart, so it comes down to neighbourhood and taste rather than convenience.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

Otemachi is Tokyo's financial district, all glass towers and empty weekend streets, and this Four Seasons sits inside that seriousness with rooms built for calm rather than spectacle: pale wood, deep bathtubs, low light, garden views in some rooms looking onto the old moat and pine trees near Masakado's grave. It is a hotel of restraint - understated lobbies, quiet corridors, a small indoor pool and spa tucked away from the street. The crowd is business travellers and couples who want privacy and don't need a view to feel like they've arrived.

Best for guests who want understated, business-district calm and don't need the room to have a view.

Park Hyatt Tokyo

The Park Hyatt occupies the top floors of Kenzo Tange's Shinjuku Park Tower, and the building does the work: the Peggy Guggenheim-scaled library lounge, the New York Grill on the 52nd floor with floor-to-ceiling windows over the city and, on clear days, Fuji, the long lacquered bar that made this hotel famous well before Lost in Translation used it as shorthand for Tokyo glamour. Rooms are large by Tokyo standards, dressed in cherry wood and washi-paper screens, with a hush that comes from being forty-plus storeys above the Shinjuku traffic. It draws travellers who want the skyline as part of the room.

Best for guests who want the classic Tokyo skyline experience and plan to actually use the restaurants and bars.

The Park Hyatt, for around $600 less a night, does without a hot tub, though it makes up for it with a full spa, indoor pool, three restaurants and two bars that the Four Seasons' listing doesn't match.

The Park Hyatt is the more beautiful place to be, simply because Tange's tower and those Shinjuku-night views give the building a character no amount of quiet good taste at Otemachi can replicate.

“A Disappointing Stay That Made Us Reconsider Four Seasons”

Polished Courtesy, but Inconsistent Hospitality Our family stayed at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi for seven nights. We booked a suite for ourselves and a separate room for my mother, so this was a substantial family stay and gave us enough time to experience the hotel well beyond a brief first impression. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply mixed. While the staff were consistently polite on the surface,

“Vacation”

We had a wonderful stay at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. What stood out to me the most was the level of care and support from the hotel team. They went out of their way to help me with an important situation during my trip and continued assisting me even after I had already left Japan. I especially appreciate the time and effort the team put into helping me resolve everything. They certainly did not have to

Luxury stay close to Shinjuku. Amazing view. Fantastic service. Only downside is that the on-site restaurants need to be booked in advance, depending on the season.
