The honest take

Both are Tokyo landmarks, but they offer different nights. HOSHINOYA Tokyo, at $2,162, is a small ryokan-tower with its own hot spring, tucked into 84 rooms in Otemachi. Park Hyatt Tokyo, at $1,393, is the bigger, more amenity-rich option, with spa, pool, fitness and parking that HOSHINOYA doesn't list, plus the New York Grill 52 storeys up. If you want the quieter, more singular experience and the onsen matters, book HOSHINOYA; if you want the full five-star machine and to save money, Park Hyatt is the one.

The look and the feel

HOSHINOYA Tokyo

HOSHINOYA Tokyo is built as a vertical ryokan, wrapped in a lattice screen of Edo-komon patterning that filters the Otemachi skyline into shadow and slat. You leave your shoes at the door on every floor, padding over tatami to rooms with washi paper, low furniture and a sunken hot-spring bath fed by a real onsen drilled 1,500 metres down, rare for central Tokyo. The communal bath on the top floor looks out over the financial district through more of that latticework, an odd, effective collision of geothermal ritual and glass towers. It draws travellers who want the Japanese inn experience without leaving the city core, and who don't mind paying for scarcity: only 84 rooms, and an interior logic entirely its own.

Design-minded travellers who want the ryokan ritual, an actual onsen, and total quiet, and don't need a pool or gym.

Park Hyatt Tokyo

Park Hyatt Tokyo occupies the top floors of Kenzo Tange's Shinjuku Park Tower, the hotel made famous by Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, and it still trades on that hush: dark wood, deep chairs, a New York Grill bar with a wraparound view of Shinjuku's lit towers and, on clear days, Fuji. The lobby is on the 41st floor, so arrival itself is an ascent, and the rooms keep a quiet, brass-and-walnut restraint rather than shouting through decor. It's a hotel built for business travellers and long-stay romantics who want the spa, the pool, the fitness club and the sense of the whole city laid out under glass.

Travellers who want the full five-star amenity set, the skyline views and that particular Shinjuku cinematic hush, at a lower price.

Booking HOSHINOYA over Park Hyatt means giving up the spa, indoor pool, fitness club and on-site parking that Park Hyatt lists, in exchange for the onsen and a smaller, more considered building.

HOSHINOYA is the more singular piece of design, an actual architectural idea about what a Tokyo inn could be, while Park Hyatt is the more beautiful room to sit in with a drink and watch the city do its thing.

“Disappointed. Booked 6 months in advance, family split over floors, and poorly managed throughout.”

The architecture is beautiful, and that is where the positives end. We booked this hotel more than six months in advance, yet on arrival our family was split across two different floors. In a hotel built around the idea of shared communal spaces on each floor, that matters. It immediately took away the ability for us to enjoy the stay together as a family in the way the hotel’s own concept is meant to work. What mad

“Japanese immersion!”

If you want to be fully immersed on arrival in a Japanese experience this is the right place. Full on Japanese…. Which we enjoyed. Great location in quiet area. Western breakfast a bonus. We went half board which for 3 nights was too much Japenese food so would suggest dinner 1 night and then head out the other nights. 1 dinner is enough as they do repeat the menu which would be a criticism but overall a super place

“Beautiful hotel, but serious issues with unexpected charges and communication”

I recently stayed at HOSHINOYA Tokyo and unfortunately my experience ended up being very disappointing. The property itself is beautiful, but two situations during my stay left a very bad impression. I checked in on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, briefly dropped my luggage in the room, and went out to explore the city. When I returned later that evening (around 8:00 pm), staff told me there was damage to a bamboo window pane

Has stood the test of time! World class staff. Hopefully the renovation doesn’t lose the spirit!!!

Luxury stay close to Shinjuku. Amazing view. Fantastic service. Only downside is that the on-site restaurants need to be booked in advance, depending on the season.

This hotel has amazingly views. Rooms are big. I loved Park Hyatt Tokyo.
