Book Cotton House Hotel unless you specifically want a spa, rooftop and indoor pool combo and 24-hour room service, because at $396 against $866 it delivers nearly the same guest rating (9.1 vs 9.2) at less than half the price. Mandarin Oriental has the bigger facility list and the address that puts you directly among Gaudí's buildings on Passeig de Gràcia. Cotton House sits 0.4km away on Gran Vía, which still puts you in the Eixample, just a different stretch of it. For most travellers the saving buys a lot more than the extra amenities are worth.
Mandarin Oriental Barcelona occupies a former bank building on Passeig de Gràcia, gutted and reworked by designer Patricia Urquiola into something cool and graphic rather than fussy: sculptural furniture, bold colour blocks, a lobby that reads more contemporary art gallery than grand hotel. The rooftop pool and terrace look out over the rooflines and chimneys of the Eixample, and the interior courtyard garden gives a quiet green break from the traffic on the boulevard outside. It draws a design-literate, well-heeled crowd who want to be steps from Casa Batlló and La Pedrera without leaving a very controlled, very polished environment.
Travellers who want the full five-star infrastructure, indoor and outdoor pools, spa and room service, and don't mind paying for it.
Cotton House occupies the former headquarters of the Cotton Manufacturers' Association, and the building's civic, slightly severe bones are still legible in the high ceilings and grand staircase, dressed now by Lázaro Rosa-Violán in tweed, leather, brass library ladders and a genuine wall of books in the lounge. It feels literary and clubbish rather than sleek, more tailored suit than statement dress, with a sixth-floor gym and massage room and a seasonal outdoor pool tucked above the street. The crowd here is the kind that wants a five-star with a story attached to the walls rather than a showroom finish.
Travellers who want real character and history at a sharp price and can live without an indoor pool or spa.
Cotton House gives up the spa, the rooftop and indoor pools, and pet-friendly policy that Mandarin Oriental has, running instead on a single seasonal outdoor pool and a smaller sixth-floor gym.
Cotton House is the more characterful room to sit in, its cotton-trade history and Rosa-Violán's clubby, bookish interiors give it a personality Mandarin Oriental's polished, gallery-cool spaces trade away for consistency.

Nothing on our list that Mandarin Oriental lacks.
“Absolutely stunningly beautiful property.”
Mandarin Oriental guests come away happier overall, since every review is uniformly positive, while Cotton House earns similar high praise for its beauty and staff but one guest reports poor pool and bar service.
“Gorgeous property that feels 5 star.”
Very lux. The room was perfectly appointed and the staff is friendly and helpful.
“Beautiful property but terrible service”
This is such a shame as the hotel is gorgeous. Room is lovely. Aircon worked great. Linens were high quality. Stayed 3 nights in a Tafetan Suite on a cash stay. No points, no upgrades, etc. Pool is too small for the hotel so people sit on the deck making the space crowded and not very relaxing. After waiting 45 minutes for drink service at the pool today, I left the pool and went down to the bar to order drinks.
“Perfection”
Absolutely stunningly beautiful property. This property deserves 10 stars. The decor was pure perfection and the staff was exceptional.
