The honest take
One&Only Royal Mirage is $542 a night with a 9.4/10 rating across 400 reviews, on the Jumeirah beachfront with four pools, a private beach, seven restaurants and eight bars. Raffles Dubai is $279, inland on Sheikh Rashid Road at Wafi, with no guest rating shown and 116 reviews, one pool, three restaurants and a spa. If beach and scale matter, pay the difference for Royal Mirage; if you want a striking building in a different part of the city for half the price, Raffles does the job.
The look and the feel
One&Only Royal Mirage
Built in the late 1990s as a low-rise Arabian palace fantasy, all wind towers, courtyards and hand-carved mashrabiya screens running down to the sand. The three interlinked buildings sit in landscaped gardens with fountains and reflecting pools, so the walk from lobby to beach is its own event, gold-leaf domes and dark wood giving way to open sky and the Gulf. It draws a crowd here for the resort itself rather than the city, families and couples who want four pools and a private beach and don't need to leave the grounds.
Best for beach-and-pool holidaymakers and families who want a self-contained resort with multiple pools and dining options.
Raffles Dubai
Raffles Dubai is the one shaped like a pyramid, rising over the Wafi complex on Sheikh Rashid Road with a glass apex and a lobby of polished stone and soaring atrium light. Inside it leans on the Raffles house style, colonial references, dark wood panelling and potted palms, transplanted into a very Dubai setting of malls and a nightclub downstairs. It suits guests who want an unusual, photogenic building close to Dubai's older commercial districts rather than the beach, and who don't mind the energy of Wafi's shopping and nightlife on the doorstep.
Best for travellers who want a landmark building and lower price, and who don't need a beach or extensive pool facilities.
At $279, Raffles gives up the water park, golf, rooftop and private beach that come with Royal Mirage, along with several restaurants, bars and three of its four pools.
Royal Mirage is the more beautiful place to actually stay, an Arabian palace complex meeting the sea, though Raffles' pyramid is the more arresting single building to look at from a distance.

My friend and I needed a place to decompress, given the situation we are in, as well as his own health challenges.
I had a totally different choice but he convinced me to join him at the One & Only Royal Mirage due to its prestige as one of the OGs of Dubai's upscale hotel brands.
We were given a notification that we could check in before noon so we aimed to be there at 11:00am. However, our room was not ready so

“One of the best hotels that I have stayed in Dubai. Amazing and 7 start experience”
Amazing resort. Location, cleanliness, views, services, professionalism, quality of food...ALL Amazing and second to none. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for your hospitality

“Far better options at this price point.”
Super courteous when the hotel was empty. Restaurant and pool staff remained very friendly and efficient as they could be as things got busier.
Clearly the hotel had been overbooked as we were hounded by constant calls from the front desk trying to make us check out early, despite having agreed a late check out when we checked in. Front desk then denied ever having made the agreement. Even the promised pool pass, off
