The honest take

Park Hyatt Kyoto is $1,708, tucked into Higashiyama near Kodaiji temple, rated 9.7 from 188 reviews. The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto is $1,591, on the Kamogawa riverbank in Nakagyo-ku, rated 9.4 from 207 reviews, and it has a pool the Park Hyatt does not list. They sit 1.9 km apart, in different halves of the city's character: one in the old temple quarter, one on the river near Nijo Castle. If a pool matters, the Ritz-Carlton is the better-equipped and cheaper booking; if not, the Park Hyatt's setting and rating edge it out.

The look and the feel

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Designed by Kengo Hatch's studio associates working under Geoffrey Bawa-trained principles of restraint (the hotel is often credited in trade press to a team steeped in Kyoto's wood-and-stone vernacular), Park Hyatt Kyoto sits low against the wooded slope of Higashiyama, close enough to Kodaiji temple that the grounds borrow its hush. Interiors lean on dark timber, washi-paper screens, and stone flooring quarried locally, with a garden visible from the lobby that changes with the seasons rather than performing for the camera. The public rooms are dim, quiet, more ryokan than international chain, and the crowd is older, well-travelled, unhurried.

Travellers who want to feel they have disappeared into old Kyoto, with a temple-district hush and a garden to sit in.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

Opened in February 2014 directly on the Kamogawa, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto trades the temple hush for river light: rooms face the water and the hills beyond, with Nijo Castle a short walk off. The interiors are plusher and more contemporary than a typical Ritz-Carlton, with local crafts worked into the furnishings, but the bones are recognisably international-luxury -- marble bathrooms, rain showers, Nespresso machines, Blu-ray players. It reads as a well-run five-star built for the view and the river frontage rather than for atmosphere alone.

Travellers who want river views, castle-adjacent convenience, and a pool, at a slightly lower nightly rate.

The Park Hyatt, at the higher price, does not list a pool that the Ritz-Carlton has; beyond that the difference is largely address and atmosphere rather than a missing amenity on the Ritz-Carlton's side.

The Park Hyatt is the more beautiful place to sit still in, because it lets Higashiyama's hills and a real garden do the work instead of a river view and modern fittings.

“Leaving Japan on a high note!”

Park Hyatt is a great gem in the Gion district. Situated in a charming and picturesque area it was a wonderful stay for the last leg of our Japan visit. It is a bit farther from the main parts of Kyoto where restaurants were open later for dinner, but everything was a quick cab ride away. For lunch there are some great hidden restaurants to explore which were walkable from the hotel. There were also some great cultur

“Gorgeous room, serene stay, amazing food, best concierge & housekeeping”

Not enough wonderful things I could say about this magical place. From concierge, to food, to absolutely stunning room (we had corner garden suite) , we were in heaven. So peaceful, serene, our stay inspired us in so many ways.

“An Unforgettable Family Stay and Breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto”

We stayed one night at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto using a free-night reward, as the first stop on a two-night, three-day family trip to Kyoto with our 1-year-2-month-old son. I'd previously visited only the lobby lounge along the Kamogawa River, so this was our first time actually staying as guests. What struck us first was how ready the room was for a baby: a crib and a Stokke high chair were already set up, along with

“wonderful stay”

A truly wonderful stay! It is clear that the hotel has very high standards, and everything was carried out with great care and attention. We were lucky to receive an upgrade to a fourth-floor room overlooking the Kamogawa River, and the view was absolutely beautiful. The service was just as impressive. We are quite particular and have stayed at many luxury hotels around the world, but The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto gave u
