The honest take
Six Senses Kyoto, at $1,009 against the Ritz-Carlton's $1,621, wins on both design and value. It has a higher facility count relevant to wellness (indoor pool, sauna, fitness centre) and sits in Higashiyama, Kyoto's old temple quarter, rather than beside the Ritz's riverside subway convenience. The Ritz-Carlton counters with parking and a hot tub and a slightly higher guest rating, 9.4 against 9, but with fewer reviews behind the Six Senses score the gap is not decisive. Book the Ritz if you need a car and a hot tub and want the river view; otherwise Six Senses is the better room for the money.
The look and the feel
The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto
The Ritz-Carlton occupies a low, quiet building on the Kamogawa, opened in 2014 with the brand's usual formula of restrained luxury applied to a Kyoto setting: dark timber, tatami-adjacent detailing, courtyard gardens visible through big glass, and rooms with rain showers and Nespresso machines rather than anything more eccentric. The public spaces read as calm and corporate-elegant rather than characterful, built to reassure an international guest rather than surprise a local one. It is handsome in the way a very well-run five-star chain hotel is handsome, with river views doing a lot of the emotional work.
Business and leisure travellers who want river views, subway access to Nijo Castle, and the predictable comfort of a modern five-star.
Six Senses Kyoto
Six Senses sits in Higashiyama, the district of steep lanes, old wooden machiya and the approach to Kiyomizu-dera, and the hotel leans into that setting with an indoor pool, sauna and fitness centre built around a wellness identity rather than a business-traveller one. Six Senses as a brand favours natural materials, stone, wood, soft earth tones, and a slower, spa-driven rhythm, and the Kyoto property follows that template within a residential-feeling compound rather than a riverside tower. It draws people booking a retreat as much as a hotel stay, kids' club included.
Couples or families wanting a slower, wellness-focused stay in Kyoto's temple district, with a pool and sauna built into the day.
Six Senses gives up parking and an in-room hot tub, so anyone driving or wanting to soak privately loses out for the lower price.
Six Senses is the more atmospheric place to actually stay, its Higashiyama setting and wellness-led design doing more for the senses than the Ritz's polished but generic riverside calm.

“An Unforgettable Family Stay and Breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto”
We stayed one night at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto using a free-night reward, as the first stop on a two-night, three-day family trip to Kyoto with our 1-year-2-month-old son. I'd previously visited only the lobby lounge along the Kamogawa River, so this was our first time actually staying as guests.
What struck us first was how ready the room was for a baby: a crib and a Stokke high chair were already set up, along with

A truly wonderful stay! It is clear that the hotel has very high standards, and everything was carried out with great care and attention.
We were lucky to receive an upgrade to a fourth-floor room overlooking the Kamogawa River, and the view was absolutely beautiful.
