The honest take

The Peninsula Bangkok comes in at $365 a night with a 9.3 rating across 1,404 reviews, against The Siam's $549 and only 108 reviews with no rating shown. Both are five-star, but the Peninsula's scale, service reputation and river position make it the stronger booking at a lower price. The Siam has the hot tub in its favour and a waterfront setting of its own, but the numbers and the guest volume favour the Peninsula decisively.

The look and the feel

The Siam

The Siam sits on the Chao Phraya in Dusit, a small art deco-inflected property built around a collection of vintage furniture, teak panelling and 1930s Thai-European decorative pieces assembled by its owners. Rooms have fireplaces and freestanding tubs, which is unusual for Bangkok and gives the place a colonial-house intimacy rather than a tower-hotel feel. The public spaces are compact and dim, more private members' club than grand hotel lobby, with a muay thai gym and a small fleet of vintage cars adding to the eccentric, curated character. It draws a design-literate, quieter crowd who want atmosphere over scale.

Right for travellers who want a small, idiosyncratic property with real design personality and don't mind trading scale and services for atmosphere.

The Peninsula Bangkok

The Peninsula Bangkok occupies the west bank of the Chao Phraya opposite the old city, a modernist tower with a soaring atrium lobby, dark wood, brass fittings and a river view that runs through nearly every public room and guestroom. It has the polish of a long-established international flagship: marble bathrooms, a spa built around traditional Thai treatment rooms, and a riverside pool that runs almost to the water's edge. The scene at dusk, with longtail boats crossing in front of the temples on the opposite bank, is one of the best hotel views in the city. It draws a broader, more international five-star crowd, business and leisure both.

Right for travellers who want a large, polished five-star hotel with river views, deep service infrastructure and a strong review record.

The Siam gives up scale and guest volume for its boutique intimacy, and lacks the Peninsula's broader international name recognition; the Peninsula, for its lower price, gives up the in-room hot tub The Siam offers.

The Siam is the more characterful place to sit still in, with its curated antiques and quiet teak rooms, but the Peninsula is the more beautiful place to simply be, given its river frontage and the light off the water at every hour.

“Missing Siam already”

The hotel was amazingly beautiful and well appointed. We stayed in a villa and it was heaven. Our butler was so helpful in making arrangements for the hotel boat to take us to our activities and gave us great recommendations on this to do. We misses him and the rest of the friendly hotel team the minute we left!
