The honest take

Book The St. Regis Bangkok. It's $415 a night against The Siam's $551, rated 9.2 with 426 reviews compared to no guest rating and only 108 reviews for The Siam, and it sits on Rajadamri Road in the commercial core with butler service and a medical spa. The Siam's trump card is its riverside setting, a facility the St. Regis lacks entirely, and that alone might decide it for some travellers. But on price, review volume and address, the St. Regis is the stronger booking.

The look and the feel

The Siam

The Siam occupies a stretch of the Chao Phraya north of the old city, a compound of colonial-revival and art deco touches assembled by owners who collected Thai antiques and mid-century furniture rather than commissioning a single decorator's vision throughout. Rooms come with fireplaces and private indoor spa tubs, an odd, almost anachronistic pairing in tropical Bangkok that gives the place a slightly eccentric, houseguest-of-a-wealthy-family feel. The riverfront position is the real asset: boats passing, a pool that looks onto the water, a quieter, greener pocket of the city away from the malls and traffic. It draws a guest who wants seclusion and a sense of curated eccentricity over central convenience.

Travellers who want river views, seclusion and quirky, antique-filled rooms over being near the shopping districts.

The St. Regis Bangkok

The St. Regis sits on Rajadamri Road, steps from Lumphini Park and the elevated BTS line, in the commercial heart of the city rather than tucked along a riverbank. The interiors lean on warm colour, textured rugs and Thai artwork worked into a fairly classic St. Regis template of chandeliers, marble floors and a formal, hushed lobby, with butler service on every floor reinforcing the sense of old-world hotel ritual transplanted into a glass tower. The brand's signature rituals, the sabre-opened champagne, the tailored butler presence, give it a more theatrical, service-forward atmosphere than a design-forward one. It suits guests who want to be in the middle of Bangkok's shopping and business district with full-service polish on tap.

Travellers who want a central, service-heavy five-star base near Lumphini Park and the BTS with butler service included.

At $415 against $551, the St. Regis gives up direct waterfront access, which The Siam has and it doesn't; in exchange the cheaper St. Regis actually adds a hot tub and golf access The Siam lacks, so the trade here runs both ways rather than being a straightforward downgrade.

The Siam is the more characterful place to be, an idiosyncratic riverside compound with fireplaces and antiques rather than a polished corporate template, and that eccentricity is worth more to look at than the St. Regis's competent formality.

“Missing Siam already”

The hotel was amazingly beautiful and well appointed. We stayed in a villa and it was heaven. Our butler was so helpful in making arrangements for the hotel boat to take us to our activities and gave us great recommendations on this to do. We misses him and the rest of the friendly hotel team the minute we left!
