The honest take

Same rating, same star tier, 1.3km apart, and the Peninsula runs $134 more a night for a room with fewer listed amenities than the Conrad, which includes parking. Both have spas, indoor pools and multiple dining options, so the choice comes down to neighbourhood and taste in atmosphere rather than facilities. If you're counting dollars, Conrad Tokyo is the better-specified booking at this price point. If you want the more classically grand arrival experience, pay the difference for the Peninsula.

The look and the feel

Conrad Tokyo

Conrad Tokyo sits above Shiodome, all glass curtain wall and high floors, with a lobby that leans contemporary rather than traditional Japanese - clean lines, warm wood accents, big windows onto Tokyo Bay and Hamarikyu Gardens. Rooms are done in a muted modern palette, more corporate-luxury than historic, with floor-to-ceiling glass that makes the view the main decorative element. The 29th-floor spa and China Blue restaurant give it a stacked, vertical feel, everything piled up toward the skyline rather than spread out. It draws business travellers and couples who want new-build polish and a view over old-world texture.

Right for travellers who want sweeping bay views, vertical glamour and slightly better value at the top end.

The Peninsula Tokyo

The Peninsula Tokyo faces the Imperial Palace moat in Marunouchi, a Beaux-Arts-adjacent low-rise by Tokyo standards, with a lobby that plays the grand hotel game properly - marble floors, a pianist some evenings, afternoon tea served with visible ceremony. Heifen Terrace does Cantonese under a more traditional room, and the whole place has the hush of old money hospitality rather than skyline spectacle. It's the address for people who want limo service, express check-out and the sense of being looked after by an institution rather than a hotel.

Right for those who want the ceremony of a grand hotel, a palace-facing address and don't mind paying for it.

The cheaper Conrad has everything the Peninsula does bar one thing: it includes parking, which the Peninsula's listing doesn't mention, so the price gap buys you address and service polish rather than any missing amenity.

The Peninsula is the more beautiful room to stand in - marble, moat views and old-school grandeur beat Conrad's glass-and-view formula for sheer character.

Great hotel

Walkable - friendly, superb.

8/10

I stayed at The Peninsula Tokyo twice about 10 years ago, and this was my third visit. The location is still unbeatable, but the hotel feels a bit tired now. Service was fine but unremarkable, overall the hotel lacked a distinctive character that sets it apart from other luxury options in Tokyo.
