The honest take

The Tokyo Station Hotel comes in at $753 with a 9.5 guest rating from over 2,000 reviews, against the Four Seasons Otemachi at $2,020 with a 9.4 rating from 652 reviews. The gap in price is not matched by a gap in guest satisfaction. The Four Seasons wins on wellness facilities, with its pool and hot tub, and includes breakfast where the Station Hotel does not. For most travellers the Station Hotel's location and score make it the sharper booking; the Four Seasons is for those who specifically want spa and pool time built into the stay.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

The Four Seasons Otemachi sits high in the Otemachi Tower, a glass-and-steel financial-district block designed with the clean, restrained language contemporary Four Seasons properties favour: pale stone, soft wood screens, low lighting, big windows looking over the Imperial Palace moat and gardens. The rooms are large by Tokyo standards, done in muted greys and warm timber, with the kind of hush that comes from thick carpet and double glazing against a business district that empties out at night. It draws executives, discreet money, and travellers who want anonymity and a spa within the same building rather than a sense of old Tokyo.

Business travellers and anyone wanting a modern high-rise spa hotel with pool, hot tub and skyline views over the palace gardens.

The Tokyo Station Hotel

The Tokyo Station Hotel occupies the red-brick Marunouchi building of Tokyo Station itself, a 1914 structure by Tatsuno Kingo restored and reopened in 2012, and the interiors lean into that history with a European classical style — plaster cornicing, chandeliers, dark wood panelling, deep armchairs in the lounges. Rooms carry that plush, slightly formal decor through to bathrobes and marble-look bathrooms, and the whole place has the feel of a grand European terminus hotel dropped into central Tokyo, with trains running underneath and Marunouchi's office towers and Ginza a short walk away.

Travellers who want a characterful historic building, easy rail and airport access, and a strong rate-to-quality ratio.

At $753 the Tokyo Station Hotel gives up the pool, hot tub and included breakfast that come with the Four Seasons' $2,020 rate — everything else, including guest satisfaction, holds up or exceeds it.

The Tokyo Station Hotel is the more characterful place to be, a genuine century-old brick landmark with real architectural weight, where the Four Seasons is a well-executed but generic luxury shell inside a modern tower.

“A Disappointing Stay That Made Us Reconsider Four Seasons”

Polished Courtesy, but Inconsistent Hospitality Our family stayed at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi for seven nights. We booked a suite for ourselves and a separate room for my mother, so this was a substantial family stay and gave us enough time to experience the hotel well beyond a brief first impression. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply mixed. While the staff were consistently polite on the surface,

“Vacation”

We had a wonderful stay at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. What stood out to me the most was the level of care and support from the hotel team. They went out of their way to help me with an important situation during my trip and continued assisting me even after I had already left Japan. I especially appreciate the time and effort the team put into helping me resolve everything. They certainly did not have to
