The honest take

The Hassler sits directly atop the Spanish Steps with a rooftop restaurant that has one of the great views in Rome, and at $1671 you pay for that address. The St. Regis, near Piazza della Repubblica, runs $1044, adds pet policy, parking and a proper bar the Hassler's own list doesn't flag, and has nearly six times the review volume backing its 9.4. Both score identically on guest rating, so this comes down to what kind of Roman stay you want: a small, storied hotel wedged into the most photographed corner of the city, or a grand Belle Époque palace with more room to spread out. Book the St. Regis if you want value and amenities; book the Hassler if the location and the rooftop are the point.

The look and the feel

Hassler Roma

The Hassler has occupied the top of the Spanish Steps since 1885, and its lobby still has that slightly theatrical old-money feel: marble floors, gilt mirrors, a curving staircase, and a general sense of being watched by other well-dressed people. The Imàgo restaurant on the sixth floor is the real draw, a glass-walled room with a sweeping view over Rome's rooftops and domes, particularly good at sunset. Rooms lean traditional Italian, brocade, dark wood, chandeliers, nothing minimalist about it. The crowd is older money, honeymooners with a serious budget, and anyone who wants to walk out the door directly onto the Spanish Steps.

Anyone who wants to be inside the postcard, and is happy paying for the exact address.

The St. Regis Rome

The St. Regis Rome occupies a late-19th-century building near Termini and Piazza della Repubblica, restored with the label's usual heavy hand: crystal chandeliers, frescoed ceilings, deep colour palettes of gold and burgundy, a lobby built for entrances. It has more of a business-hotel backbone than the Hassler, with proper meeting rooms and a larger footprint, but the public spaces still go for grandeur over restraint. The neighbourhood is busier and less postcard-pretty than the Spanish Steps, closer to the station, with wide 19th-century boulevards rather than tight cobbled lanes.

Travellers who want St. Regis scale and service, a bar, parking, and pet allowance, without the Spanish Steps premium.

At the lower price, the St. Regis's own list doesn't mention a rooftop, so you lose the Hassler's signature Imàgo view and the immediate step-out-the-door access to the Spanish Steps.

The Hassler is the more beautiful place to actually stand in, mostly because of where it stands: no St. Regis ballroom competes with a glass-walled dinner over the Spanish Steps at dusk.

We have been coming to this hotel for many years, and we absolutely love the service and the staff. However, this time the room was very dirty. There was visible dust and dirty carpet. We have brought it to the attention of the front desk and hope they deep clean the rooms.

“Over the Top!”

My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at high-end hotels around the world for the lat 25 years. The St. Regis Rome was probably the pinnacle of all our past experiences. Unsurpassed staff, spectacular room, not a thing out of place, And not a single issue of even minor consequence arose during our entire visit. We've never experienced more friendly and helpful personnel, special kudos to server Marah an

“Fantastic Experience at St. Regis Rome!”

St. Regis Rome provided the best hotel stay that my family has ever had. From the moment we were welcomed at check-in, the experience was perfect in every way. We recently stayed for a few nights on either end of a side trip to another region of Italy, and the entire staff - from the head of guest relations to housekeeping - made it feel like our home away from home. We will never stay anywhere else in Rome, and pl
