The honest take

Book the Cavalieri if you want a resort with a pool, tennis courts and La Pergola's three Michelin stars, and don't mind being 4.4 km out of the centre. Book the St Regis if you want to walk to Piazza della Repubblica and be in the middle of things, and can pay the extra roughly $250 a night for it. Both sit at nine-plus guest ratings; the St Regis edges higher (9.4 vs 9) on a much smaller review base (330 vs 1122), which suggests fewer guests but very consistent satisfaction.

The look and the feel

Rome Cavalieri

The Cavalieri sits on the Monte Mario hill above Rome, a mid-century resort hotel built in the 1960s and refreshed since, with a lobby full of Old Master and modern paintings from its own art collection and long marble corridors that feel more grand hotel than boutique. Rooms have balconies looking down over the city and the Vatican dome in the distance, and the whole place is organised around that view and around the 2,500 square metre wellness centre with its Turkish bath and indoor pool. It draws a resort crowd - families, business travellers who want a gym and a driver, people happy to be a taxi ride from the centre in exchange for quiet, greenery and a rooftop with three Michelin stars.

Best for anyone who wants a proper resort stay in Rome, with pool, tennis and spa, and is fine commuting into the centre.

The St. Regis Rome

The St Regis Rome occupies a late nineteenth-century building by Cesar Ritz near Piazza della Repubblica and the Termini station, all gilt cornices, tall doors and the kind of formal, old-Europe interior the St Regis brand trades on worldwide - chandeliers, heavy drapery, a butler on call. It's a hotel built for arriving by carriage and walking straight into the historic centre, not for lounging by a pool. The public rooms have that stiff, ceremonial hush of a grand nineteenth-century hotel restored rather than reinvented, and the crowd is older, monied, here for the address as much as the room.

Best for anyone who wants to walk out the door into historic Rome and prefers grand, formal hotel theatre to resort facilities.

The St Regis, for its higher price, has no pool or hot tub on site, which the Cavalieri offers along with tennis courts and a 2,500 square metre wellness centre; what you gain instead is a central address and a smaller, more intimate guest count.

The St Regis is the more beautiful room to stand in - a genuine nineteenth-century palazzo interior - but the Cavalieri is the more interesting building to spend a whole stay in, given the view, the pool and La Pergola.

“Best Hotel in Rome”

This was our favourite hotel during our trip to Italy. Everything was perfect, the staff, the room, the food and quite possibly the best hotel gym we have ever seen. We upgraded our room and recommend using the imperial lounge.

Was quite expensive to park, but you can just leave it on the road.

“Over the Top!”

My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at high-end hotels around the world for the lat 25 years. The St. Regis Rome was probably the pinnacle of all our past experiences. “Fantastic Experience at St. Regis Rome!”

St. Regis Rome provided the best hotel stay that my family has ever had. From the moment we were welcomed at check-in, the experience was perfect in every way. We recently stayed for a few nights on either end of a side trip to another region of Italy, and the entire staff - from the head of guest relations to housekeeping - made it feel like our home away from home. We will never stay anywhere else in Rome, and pl
