The honest take

Palace Hotel Tokyo is the sensible booking: $1,349 a night against HOSHINOYA's $2,128, a higher guest rating (9.6 vs 9.4 from far more reviews), and a spa, pool, fitness centre and parking that HOSHINOYA doesn't list. HOSHINOYA Tokyo costs roughly 58% more and gives you a genuinely unusual building and onsen experience in exchange. If you want efficient five-star comfort near the station, book Palace; if you want a singular architectural experience and don't mind paying for it, book HOSHINOYA.

The look and the feel

HOSHINOYA Tokyo

HOSHINOYA Tokyo is built as a modern ryokan stacked vertically inside a tower in Otemachi, designed around the idea of a private residence with its own hot spring drawn from 1,500 metres below the city. You remove your shoes at the entrance on the second floor, as in a traditional home, and the corridors are lined with Edo-komon patterned screens and washi paper light fixtures. Rooms are low-lit, tatami-floored, with cedar tubs and views over the financial district's glass towers, an odd and deliberate collision of onsen ritual and skyscraper Tokyo. The public bath on the top floor, with its dark tiled pool and open sky, is the reason people stay here rather than any conventional lobby scene.

Design-minded travellers who want a genuine onsen ritual and an unusual, quiet building, and are happy to pay for it.

Palace Hotel Tokyo

Palace Hotel Tokyo sits directly across from the Imperial Palace moat in Marunouchi, rebuilt in 2012 with interiors that favour warm wood, cream stone and long sightlines rather than spectacle. The lobby lounge looks straight out at palace pines and the moat, a calm, formal view that changes with the seasons, and the hotel leans on this outlook more than on any single design gesture. With seven restaurants, a spa, a pool and a fitness floor, it runs like a large, well-drilled European-style grand hotel transplanted into Tokyo's most buttoned-up business district, popular with business travellers and couples who want quiet competence over theatre.

Travellers who want five-star scale, facilities and a palace view without the premium, particularly business guests near Marunouchi.

HOSHINOYA has no listed spa, pool, fitness centre or parking, so guests get the onsen bath in place of a full leisure facility set, and no on-site parking for a car.

HOSHINOYA is the more characterful place to actually be in, because its bathing ritual and washi-lined rooms create an experience you can't get from a conventional hotel floor plan, however well Palace executes that plan.

“Disappointed. Booked 6 months in advance, family split over floors, and poorly managed throughout.”

The architecture is beautiful, and that is where the positives end. We booked this hotel more than six months in advance, yet on arrival our family was split across two different floors. In a hotel built around the idea of shared communal spaces on each floor, that matters. It immediately took away the ability for us to enjoy the stay together as a family in the way the hotel’s own concept is meant to work. What mad

“Japanese immersion!”

If you want to be fully immersed on arrival in a Japanese experience this is the right place. Full on Japanese…. Which we enjoyed. Great location in quiet area. Western breakfast a bonus. We went half board which for 3 nights was too much Japenese food so would suggest dinner 1 night and then head out the other nights. 1 dinner is enough as they do repeat the menu which would be a criticism but overall a super place

“Beautiful hotel, but serious issues with unexpected charges and communication”

I recently stayed at HOSHINOYA Tokyo and unfortunately my experience ended up being very disappointing. The property itself is beautiful, but two situations during my stay left a very bad impression. I checked in on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, briefly dropped my luggage in the room, and went out to explore the city. When I returned later that evening (around 8:00 pm), staff told me there was damage to a bamboo window pane
