The honest take

Shangri-La Tokyo runs $1,200 a night with a 9.4 rating from 575 reviews, sits right by Tokyo Station, and has a pool, spa and pet allowance the Park Hyatt lacks on the facility list. Park Hyatt Tokyo costs more at $1,404, has no guest rating shown here and far fewer reviews logged, but occupies the top floors of Kenzo Tange's Shinjuku Park Tower with the New York Grill and Bar on 52. If price and a fuller amenity sheet matter more than the Lost in Translation view, book Shangri-La; if you want that specific building and skyline, pay the difference for Park Hyatt.

The look and the feel

Shangri-La Tokyo

Shangri-La Tokyo occupies the upper floors of the Marunouchi Trust Tower, glass and steel from the outside but warmed inside with dark wood, silk and lacquer screens nodding to classical Chinese and Japanese motifs, the house style of the Shangri-La group. Rooms look toward the Imperial Palace grounds or Tokyo Skytree, and the lobby lounge does the brand's usual trick of soft gold light and a a floral centrepiece the size of a small tree. It sits directly over Tokyo Station, so the crowd is business travellers and transiting guests who want efficiency dressed up as luxury.

Business travellers and anyone who wants five-star comfort within walking distance of Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace gardens.

Park Hyatt Tokyo

Park Hyatt Tokyo fills the top fourteen floors of Kenzo Tange's 1994 Shinjuku Park Tower, and the design by John Morford leans into that height: dark timber, stone floors, art deco lamps, and windows that turn the Shinjuku skyline into wallpaper. The New York Grill on the 52nd floor, all glass and jazz piano, is the hotel's signature room, and the New York Bar next to it is the one Bill Murray drank in on screen. It draws people who come for the building and the view as much as the bed, and Shinjuku at night below is neon and noise, a contrast the hotel's hush plays against.

Design and film pilgrims who want Tange's tower, the New York Bar, and a room with the Shinjuku skyline as the view.

Park Hyatt has no facilities missing on this list, so the gap is address, the specific building, and its named restaurants and bars rather than any single amenity Shangri-La lacks.

Park Hyatt Tokyo is the more beautiful place to be, purely for the Tange tower and the Morford interiors that made it a design landmark before it was ever a film location.

Amazing service all around. Misaki Ohno was always so delightful and helpful with everything. Beautiful property, convenient location to get around and to and from both airports. Service with a smile. Everyone aims to please and exceed expectations. Can’t wait to stay here again!

Luxury stay close to Shinjuku. Amazing view. Fantastic service. Only downside is that the on-site restaurants need to be booked in advance, depending on the season.
