The honest take
La Mamounia is cheaper at $1,285 versus $1,903, sits inside the city near the Medina, and has the deeper facility list with four bars, indoor and outdoor pools and a full spa. Amanjena costs more and sits well outside town on the Ouarzazate road, but it has pet allowance and golf, and a rating of 9.8 against La Mamounia's 9 across a smaller review base. Book La Mamounia if you want Marrakech itself and its history; book Amanjena if you want walled-garden quiet, a private pavilion feel and don't mind the drive.
The look and the feel
Amanjena Resort
Amanjena was designed by André Paccard in the late 1990s as a modern take on an Almoravid palace: pink pisé walls, reflecting pools, green tiled pavilions arranged around still water. Rooms are freestanding maisons and pavilions with high domed ceilings, carved plaster, dark wood furniture and shuttered windows that keep the Marrakech light soft and filtered. The public spaces are hushed and processional rather than social, built for guests who want privacy over spectacle, with long views across olive groves and the Atlas hills in the distance.
Amanjena suits guests who want total seclusion, a private pool pavilion and no interest in walking to the souks.
La Mamounia
La Mamounia occupies its 1920s Art Deco bones, remodelled by Jacques Garcia in the 2000s with a heavier, more theatrical hand: lacquered wood, brass fretwork, deep reds and gold leaf, Moroccan zellige tile against French furniture. The gardens are historic, planted originally for the Mamoun princes, with orange trees and hundred-year-old olives around the pools. The lobby and bars are busy and social by comparison, a place where old Marrakech money, visiting film people and hotel-watchers all pass through the same corridors.
La Mamounia suits guests who want to be in Marrakech, walk to the Medina, and enjoy a hotel that is itself a landmark with a livelier bar scene.
The cheaper hotel, La Mamounia, gives up nothing on the facility list itself but sacrifices the isolation, private pavilions and golf/pet allowances that come with Amanjena's out-of-town estate.
La Mamounia is the more beautiful place to actually be in, because Garcia's Art Deco-Moorish interiors and the century-old gardens give it a layered, lived-in grandeur that Amanjena's more austere, purpose-built calm doesn't attempt to match.

What guests actually say
Amanjena Resort
warm welcome and attentive staff
calm, peaceful atmosphere

poor quality shampoo and shower gel
“A hotel with excellent communication from start to finish.”
La Mamounia
gorgeous facilities and gardens
friendly, professional staff
beautiful rooms and spa
front desk not impressive
“Probably the most beautiful properties we've ever stayed in.”
La Mamounia's guests are generally happier and more numerous in their praise of the stunning property and staff, though one guest was let down by the front desk, whereas Amanjena's smaller set of reviews focus on calm and attentive service with only minor gripes about amenities.
A hotel with excellent communication from start to finish. The warm welcomes and their great attention, along with the calm and peaceful atmosphere, truly make it clearly the best hotel in Marrakech.
The massage could be better, and the shampoo and conditioner/shower gel in the room were very bad.
