The honest take

Both sit at the top of Marrakech's hotel scene with identical 9.8 guest ratings, but they're different propositions. Royal Mansour, at $2,866 a night, is the more expensive and the more urban, tucked by the medina walls with four restaurants, three bars and a rooftop the other lacks. Amanjena, at $1,903, is the resort version six kilometres out towards Ouarzazate, with pools, tennis, bikes and grounds to roam. Book Royal Mansour for the riad-as-palace experience close to the souks; book Amanjena if you want a self-contained resort and don't mind the drive in.

The look and the feel

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Royal Mansour was built as a series of private riads arranged around a central garden, designed under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, with zellige tilework, carved cedar ceilings and hand-tooled plasterwork done by Moroccan artisans rather than imported decorators. Each guest riad has its own plunge pool and rooftop terrace, so the sense is less hotel room than small private house within a walled compound. The public spaces move from dim, tiled corridors into sudden courtyards of orange trees and running water, and the whole thing is lit at night with lanterns rather than spotlights. It draws a quiet, moneyed crowd who want the medina experience without actually staying in the medina.

Best for travellers who want the drama and craftsmanship of the medina without sacrificing privacy or service.

Amanjena Resort

Amanjena, designed by Ed Tuttle in the Aman house style, is built low and pink-walled around a great reflecting pool, with pavilions in pisé and tadelakt plaster that keep the interiors cool and dim against the heat outside. The architecture borrows from Moroccan pavilion and Andalusian garden traditions but strips out ornament in favour of flat planes, still water and long sightlines, giving it a more minimal, almost monastic calm compared with the medina's density. Guests are scattered across a large walled estate with gardens, olive trees and a central pool pavilion, so there is more space between people than at a city hotel. It suits those who want resort seclusion and grounds to walk rather than a location inside the old city.

Best for travellers who want a self-contained resort with pools, sport and grounds, and don't mind being outside the city.

Amanjena, for roughly $960 less a night, gives up the rooftop that Royal Mansour has, and trades the medina's density of restaurants and bars (four and three respectively) for a single on-site restaurant and bar set within a quieter, more isolated estate.

Royal Mansour is the more beautiful place to actually be in, because its architecture is doing something specific and local, dense with handwork and incident, where Amanjena's calm minimalism, though elegant, reads as the more generic luxury-resort formula.

“Perhaps the best hotel in the world”

This may just be the best hotel in the world. The room space and design is truly unparalleled. Every restaurant is life changing and the relaxed bar is the perfect place to unwind. The spa is lovely too and getting lost in the gardens is simply a treat at every corner.

“An Unforgettable Riad Experience”

Delivers an experience that feels completely unique. Staying in a private riad offered an incredible sense of privacy, with exquisite Moroccan craftsmanship at every turn and service that was warm, intuitive, and flawlessly executed. The dining was a highlight throughout my stay. Breakfast featured an exceptional selection of Moroccan specialties alongside fresh pastries, seasonal fruit, made-to-order egg dishes, an

“This is what perfection in hospital looks like”

The Royal Mansour is one of a kind. I’ve been to Marrakech before and thus didn’t leave the hotel for two days in order to fully enjoy the individual Riad which sets a standard beyond luxury.

There’s nothing not to dislike other than that you eventually have to leave this paradise

“THE ONE & ONLY in MARRAKECH”

A hotel with excellent communication from start to finish. The warm welcomes and their great attention, along with the calm and peaceful atmosphere, truly make it clearly the best hotel in Marrakech.

The massage could be better, and the shampoo and conditioner/shower gel in the room were very bad.
