The honest take

Royal Mansour runs $2,866 a night against La Mamounia's $1,303, and the guest scores back up the gap: 9.8 versus 9.0. Both sit within half a kilometre of each other in Marrakech, so location isn't the deciding factor. Royal Mansour adds pet allowance, golf and a rooftop that La Mamounia's listing doesn't mention. If budget matters at all, La Mamounia gives you five-star Marrakech, an Art Deco icon, tennis courts and two pools for under half the price.

The look and the feel

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Royal Mansour is built as a private riad village rather than a hotel: each guest gets a two- or three-storey house behind its own door, arranged around gardens designed with Jacques Garcia's hand in the interiors, all zellige tilework, carved cedar, tadelakt walls and brass lanterns. The scale is intimate by design; you rarely see other guests, and staff move through underground service tunnels so the walkways stay empty. Four restaurants and three bars are folded into this discretion rather than announced, and the spa occupies its own extensive wing. It draws guests who want Marrakech at its most controlled and private, with nothing left to chance.

Best for guests who want total privacy, their own riad-style house, and don't mind paying heavily for it.

La Mamounia

La Mamounia is the older, grander story: opened in 1923, its gardens were once walked by Churchill, and the current interiors carry the Art Deco bones of the original building layered with Moroccan craft, mosaic floors, carved plaster, deep colour in the lounges. The public rooms are theatrical rather than hushed, built for people to be seen in as much as to relax in, with Le Marocain restaurant, a poolside bar and four lounges keeping the place lively into the evening. Guestrooms are individually decorated, so no two feel quite the same. It suits travellers who want the romance and weight of a historic hotel rather than a sealed-off retreat.

Best for guests who want Art Deco history, a livelier social hotel, and real savings without dropping star rating.

At $1,303, La Mamounia goes without the pet allowance, golf access and rooftop that Royal Mansour offers, though it still has two pools, tennis courts, a spa and four restaurants and bars of its own.

La Mamounia is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, with a century of history, sculpted gardens and Art Deco theatre that Royal Mansour's more private, newer perfection doesn't try to match.

“Perhaps the best hotel in the world”

This may just be the best hotel in the world. The room space and design is truly unparalleled. Every restaurant is life changing and the relaxed bar is the perfect place to unwind. The spa is lovely too and getting lost in the gardens is simply a treat at every corner.

“An Unforgettable Riad Experience”

Delivers an experience that feels completely unique. Staying in a private riad offered an incredible sense of privacy, with exquisite Moroccan craftsmanship at every turn and service that was warm, intuitive, and flawlessly executed. The dining was a highlight throughout my stay. Breakfast featured an exceptional selection of Moroccan specialties alongside fresh pastries, seasonal fruit, made-to-order egg dishes, an

“This is what perfection in hospital looks like”

The Royal Mansour is one of a kind. I’ve been to Marrakech before and thus didn’t leave the hotel for two days in order to fully enjoy the individual Riad which sets a standard beyond luxury.

There’s nothing not to dislike other than that you eventually have to leave this paradise
